Qualification
After the end of the apartheid boycott (South Africa rejoined in the fifth tournament in 1992), where nine teams played each other once during the group phase, allowing the top four teams to advance to the semi-finals. During the round-robin group stage, the four teams in each group competed against one another, and the two top-performing teams from each group moved on to the semi-finals.
